Julius Gay collection of Farmington documents, 1651-1838.

Assorted records relating to Farmington, Connecticut, collected by Julius Gay. Originally bound in two volumes, the documents have been removed but have been numbered by volume and page and kept in that order. Many of the documents relate to the Revolutionary War, particularly correspondence between Fenn and Amos Wadsworth, returns of soldiers, muster rolls, list of ammunition stores in Farmington, and a subscription to send relief to the siege of Boston, 1774. A 1776 document relates to prisoner Levi Wells. There are also deeds, birth, marriage and death records, estate inventories and probate records. The bulk of the latter relate to the estates of William Lewis Sr. and Jr. and the Lewis family. Also of interest are documents about building a meeting house, 1772, a bill of sale for a Negro girl names Candace, town meeting records, letters and minutes of the First Society, at least two of which relate to the ministry of Edward Dorr Griffin. Correspondence covers a wide range of dates and topics, the most prolific correspondents being John Mix, Sally Mix, Horace Cowles, Seth Norton, David Catlin, Thomas Mather, and Reuben Norton. Several documents relate to a sealing voyage by the Ship Huron in 1803-1806. Broadsides are also included in the collection.
